KING SAUL: Called of God

There is very little doubt that King Saul came at not the best of times. Just before his coronation Samuel said,

"And ye have this day rejected your God, who Himself saved you out of all your adversities and your tribulations; and ye have said unto him, Nay, but set a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes, and by your thousands." -1 Samuel 10:19

The tone of Samuel's message showed clearly that whoever the king was he came at a hard time. The people had rejected the Almighty God, the One the nations around them dreaded and had asked for a mortal.

Despite the stance of Samuel, God in His grace decided to give Israel a king. A king to be specially anointed and ordained by Him, and He chose Saul.

Is there any doubt that God chose Saul or was it purely coincidental that he emerged king?

God arranged a series of events to bring Saul to the throne. First, his father's asses went missing and the lot fell upon him to find them and bring them back.

Just when Saul was about giving up on the lost asses, his servant gave the advice to seek a prophet - Samuel. He heeded the advice and they went bearing gifts. A quick lesson here: it pays to listen to ones subordinates and act with wisdom. Also never go to the house of God empty. Saul took gifts to Samuel, learn from this, it is a good habit to bless men of God.

In the long run, Saul met with Samuel and the scriptures reveal that God had told Samuel the day before that he would send Saul. The moment Samuel saw him God spoke to Samuel again that Saul was the man.

Samuel revealed God's plan to Saul, God gave Saul a new heart and at some point he even prophesied with the prophets. If Saul needed any convincing that it was God who called him he had it.

God saw in Saul a deliverer, someone He could use to deliver the Israelites out of the hands of the Philistines. The people demanded a king and God decided in His mercy to use that king to deliver them.

In the midst of the error of the Israelites God's wonderful love still surfaced. There are times that we take the wrong turn in life, at such times we shouldn't give up hope because God is gracious. Our God is merciful and He is always looking for the best way to bless us even when we have wronged him. A wrong turn will only lead to a damaged life if we let it.

Have you taken a wrong turn? Acknowledge your mistake, summon courage to return to God and get back on the right track.

So Saul is anointed king and certain men have dedicated themselves to his service. Will he serve God acceptably? Will he lead the people well?

HOW MANY TIMES DO YOU COUNT MONEY?

Recently, I had to make a lot of cash lodgments at the bank, and I proceeded to arrange and count the notes. I counted the various currency notes like three times and sorted them accordingly. When I got to the bank, the teller went to work, and I wasn’t surprised that the count was perfectly correct. The confidence was because I had double-checked the notes; the margin for error was very slim. In our Christian walk, we mustn’t be overly bold about our right standing in Christ if we haven’t examined ourselves again and again. 2 Cor. 13:5b says, “Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves…” Test yourself! Are you standing, or are you just thinking that you are standing? When I counted the money the first time, I could have stopped, but I needed the certainty. I know that I am born again, but I need to examine my heart: is there something hidden there that shouldn’t be there? Once, I was speaking to a group of people, and the manner of my speech wasn’t in confo...

IF WE MUST BOAST

If we must boast, let us boast of the mercies of the LORD. Two students attend lectures and put in the same level of preparation; one scores an “A” and the other a “C”. Many explanations can be available, but when we hold all other things constant, mercy is the difference between men. I have written an exam before where I prepared diligently but got into the exam hall and misinterpreted the questions, writing the exact opposite of what was expected. After the exam, I had only one prayer: God, have mercy! In Acts 13, Paul and some other prophets separated themselves to fast and pray. Mercy spoke, and Paul and Barnabas were called into a special assignment. Were they better or more diligent than the others who were not called into that particular assignment? I don’t think so. Apostle Paul later told us that everything he did was a result of the grace of God. God’s mercy and grace are what enable us to achieve any kind of result in life. Let’s be careful how we think. Let’s be careful how...

3 Reasons Why You Need Jesus

1. There is an afterlife. Even people that do not believe in God have an unspoken assurance within them that there is an afterlife. In the afterlife there are two destinations, good (heaven) and bad (hell). Jesus is the ONLY way to the good part. 2. There is  war in this life. Everyone is at war! War within, war without, war amongst, war everywhere. The enemy (devil) that we wrestle knows he has limited time to wreck his havoc. Our enemy is relentless and brutal, he has no respect for positions and titles, he works wickedness everyday. The only name he fears is JESUS, you need Jesus to win every war, have rest, peace and lasting victory. 3. Spiritual Fulfilment. Human beings are mere branches to the Tree (God). No matter how hard we try to satisfy ourselves with other things, there is a deep ache in our hearts if we don't have a relationship with God. Jesus is the only fulfilling link to the Father. Jesus is our spiritual lifeblood. If we are ever going shed the spi...
